Abstract

The present paper, which is entitled “Clues and Rhetorical Eloquence in a Pragmatic Lens”, discusses the linguistic clues in terms of rhetorical eloquence and figurative language, as well as their roles in clarifying the intended meaning. The paper analyses the role of clues in a pragmatic way, giving ample examples through figurative (poetic) language. The importance of the study lies in clarifying meaning to remove any ambiguity in a pragmatic way.
Figurative language is the art of expressing and conveying meaning in a creative and enhanced way. Clues, as pragmatic topics, are seen throughout figurative language, especially in rhetorical eloquence which includes metaphor, its types and metonymy.
The research tried to shed light on the role of clues in rhetorical eloquence, meanwhile arguing that clues help in detecting the right meaning; therefore, clues contribute to economizing language and reducing redundancy. In this paper, it is hypothesized that rhetorical eloquence, as part of figurative language, uses abundant clues to clarify meaning.
The paper comprises two sections, an introduction and a conclusion. Section one, which tackles clues and metaphor, discusses the following headlines: metaphor, types of metaphor; linguistic metaphor; logical metaphor; pragmatic clues in linguistic metaphor; and pragmatic clues in logical metaphor. Section two, which is devoted to clues and metonymy, comprises the following headlines:  metonymy, types of metonymy; metonymy and euphemism; euphemism usage; and euphemism versus dysphemism.
The paper also contains a list of references, as well as abstracts in Arabic and English.
