Writing, as a productive and cognitive skill, is complex and challenging because it involves the unification of many processes and strategies. Therefore, EFL students adopt many strategies to produce a satisfactory piece of writing. In this respect, this quantitative study attempts to explore the common writing strategies adopted in the stages of writing process, and uncover whether gender difference has any effect on using the writing strategies. Through employing a quantitative method, the data is collected from 60 Kurdish EFL learners (22 males and 38 females) studying at the University of Raparin located in Kurdistan region in Iraq. The results of data analysis show some common writing strategies adopted by the participants, and no significant difference is found between male and female participants in using the writing strategies. Based on the findings, this study provides some implications for teachers to help EFL learners improve their writing skill through using writing strategies
