Abstract
Symbolic imagery, which is an important and poetical type of poetic imagery, has an effective role in the creation of imagery. This type of imagery needs a poet with a remarkable linguistic and cultural background to create. The embodiment of symbols in poetry gives the poem more quality and exactness, and this is a historical characteristic of poetry. In his longer poems, which constitute his most read and most famous poetical works, Sherko Bekas has created poetic imagery with symbolic imagery, he was also very tactful in terms of language, adding to this his rich literary, cultural and nationalistic background, he was the bearer of his nation's pains, atrocities and genocidal catastrophes. Most of these portrayals have been through symbolic imagery, and thus he preserved his notion of poetry and literature in the transparent frame of his longer poems. The research is decided into two chapters; in the first one, which tackles theoretical aspects, poetic imagery and symbolic imagery have been presented and discussed so that the reader could get the opportunity to have some knowledge of both terms as well as the relation between them. In the second chapter, which constitutes the practical of the research, examples of symbolic imagery in Sherko Bekas' longer poems have been presented and analyzed.
