Abstract

The terms sign, reference, and symbol are distinct, but there is overlap in Kurdish language usage between them to the point where they are used interchangeably. The terms symbol, reference, and source have been the focus of discussion and disagreement for a long time among linguistic, philosophical, and logical schools, and some scientists and philosophers even associate them with the names of sources. Because the three terms—sign, reference, and symbol—appear as communication factors despite their many differences, research has demonstrated the linguistic relationship between them. For this reason, this research under the title "sign and source" aims to address the issue of the sign in the Kurdish language by defining the source and boundaries of the sign as well as the relationship between the signal and the source which means things.
