Abstract
This paper, entitled: " The role of Metaphor in the Expansion of meaning, (The everyday conversation as an example) , " is an attempt to highlight the everyday communications’ linguistic patterns that imply more one meaning. There is no doubt that a metaphor is a linguistic phenomenon that comes in various forms. In this study, the light is shed on the everyday conversations as a source for data collection due their importance as a sort of communication which may differently affected by their settings and the participants as addressers and addressees. It is through conversations, children acquire their mother tongue besides the development of their pragmatic knowledge.
Discourse analysis is not arbitrary but it is an activity with its own specific rules such as Austin’s pragmatic principles.
Such principles display that an utterance may have more than one meaning. Certain words, for instance, used to label certain things, but later, aftermath the technological development all over life aspects, the very same words acquired new meanings. This phenomenon has led to a wider range of metaphors to exist. The value of a metaphor as a linguistic phenomenon lies in its key role enriching the language with newly coined expressions to name certain things or concepts.
The present study has utilized a descriptive method besides a historical method when necessary. To conduct the study, the data has been collected from everyday conversations as the targeted pragmatic aspect of using the language can been smoothly accessed.
