The present study is about urban geomorphology, in which geographic information systems (GIS) and digital elevation models (DEM) were used to geomorphological assess to the direction of the expansion of residential areas in the city of Kalar, that located in a semi-mountainous area in the southeast of Kurdistan Region. The city is considered administratively the center of Garmian administration, the city of Darbandikhan is located in the northeast of the city of Kalar with a distance of (65) km, and the city of Khanaqin in the southeast with a distance of (35) km and Kifri with a distance of (38) km in west. The aim of this study is to geomorphological assessment to detemine the perfect direction to expansion of residential areas of the city of Kalar and its surround, in order to determine the appropriate direction for the expansion of the city and to avoid the areas of danger of flooding in the rainy season. The study found a set of results, the most important of which is the formation of a number of different geomorphological features in the study area, some of which are considered an obstacle to the expansion of the city and others to the current residential areas, and some of them are a reason for the occurrence of the flood phenomenon, however some of these aspects help in the expansion of the city, and the research expects the expansion of the city in the future in the north, northeast and northwest in the first degree, and towards west and southwest in the second degree, however in the directions to the south and east there is a natural obstacle to the expansion of the city
