The speech act of compliment is one of the neglected areas of research in the Kurdishcontext. In this paper, the researcher investigates whether Kurdish speaker affected bytheir cultural norms—in particular by the politeness system—in responding tocompliments compared to Australian interlocutors. Compliment responses wereelicited—through a Discourse Completion Task—from 10 Kurdish participants (6 malesand 4 females): all Kurdish participants were postgraduate students at the University ofNottingham in 2014 and the data for Australian participants were taken from the Tarabiand Beuzeville (2012) study. The Australian participants consisted of 5 females and 5males.The Kurdish responses were categorised according to Herbert's (1986) taxonomy and theresults show that although there are similarities in the choice of compliment responsetypes by, both groups. However, there are still some differences. This paper aims tocontribute to the knowledge of potential areas for miscommunications in interculturalinteractions, and also to find ways to improve language teaching and learning.
